The Fair.

We notice, with unalloyed pleasure, specimens of "earthen and pearin ware," on exhibition at the fair grounds. This is manufactured by the Southern Porcelain Manufacturing Company, at or near Augusta. Every thing which diversifies the employment of labor and capital in the South, should be encouraged. But when it takes a bed of worthless clay, which, perhaps, may previously have been regarded as a nuisance, and converts it into a beautiful and ornamental household article, it ought, by all means, to receive universal support.

The articles on exhibition consist, principally, of pitchers, mugs, flowerpots and spittoons. They are of beautiful model, and of variegated colors. The prices attached are as low or lower than the same articles are furnished at the North, by which by which the heavy transportation expenses are saved.

This forms another step in rendering the South independent of the North, and we hail all such with proud satisfaction.

The gentlemen forming this company possess intelligence, perseverance, energy and capital, and hence we may expect its affairs will be so managed as to successfully compete, in every particular, with northern manufacturers. And if they present as good and as elegant articles, at as low or lower rates, it becomes our duty to give them a generous support. We rejoice to see the spirit of enterprise and of independence abroad, and hope the time is not far distant, when the vast resources of the "Empire State of the South" shall be developed, and she be placed thereby in the advanced position for which nature designed her.
