ANNIVERSARY

AT SPOTSWOOD

Reformed Church Celebrates

Ninetieth Birthday Sunday.

Special to the EVENING NEWS.

Spotswood, Aug. 24: — Rev. F. T. B. Reynolds, minister of the Reformed church, of this place, is making extensive plans to observe the ninetieth anniversary of his parish in fitting style. The church was organized on August 5, 1821, but the anniversary has been delayed until Sunday, at which time will be witnessed a well arranged program. An historical address will be given by Rev. Mr. Reynolds at the morning service and in the evening he will speak on the topic, "Our Church Home."

It is expected the special services will bring together not only all the members of the congregation living in this village and vicinity, but others who have moved away during the past years to other towns, cities and states. A special effort will also he made to have present on that day several of the former pastors. Mr. Reynolds has done wonderful work in his parish and is now branching out to missions at Dunham's Corner and the little chapel at the plant of the Brookfield Glass Works, near Old Bridge.

The Reformed church, as said, was organized on August 5, 1821. A small building was dedicated on Main street on August 21, 1821, by Rev. John H. Livingston. This building was later torn down and in 1866 a much larger building erected. It is the second oldest parish in Spotswood. St. Peter’s Episcopal church was actually started in 1757, when Rev. Mr. Skinner came from a mission in Amboy and held services here. William Franklin, the last royal governor of New Jersey, granted the charter on November 23, 1773, and this important document is still preserved.
