FIRE AT OLD BRIDGE

Two Packing Houses, and Car of

Barrels Consumed.

By Special Correspondent.

OLD BRIDGE, June 29. — Considerable excitement was caused here on Wednesday night when fire was discovered in one of the packing houses of the Brookfield Glass Company. The fire was first found before 11 o'clock and the alarm was at once sounded which called in many of the workers who live nearby and the local officers of the company.

The fire gained considerable headway and burned the two packing houses and part of one of the leers.

A box car containing empty barrels was was consumed also. It is understood that about $10,000 worth of insulators, ready packed to be shipped were destroyed. Several cars already loaded stood on the siding, but these were hauled away by the drill engine and were not damaged. After a hard night the fire was placed under control and the remaining buildings were saved from destruction.

The origin of the fire is a mystery as there was nothing that seemed to occasion such a catastrophe. The plant has not been making insulators for several months, since an accident to the glass tank caused a suspension of work. Only a small force was employed in packing and loading the product. The buildings will probably be replaced in time for the fall run.
