IN OUR OWN

HOME TOWN —

HOW about a battleship of glass blocks made in the Hemingray plant of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company here? Maybe not so fantastic as it sounds. The blocks have a vacuum in their interior and float. A building whose walls were made of these blocks was caught in a tornado, the other day, and was stripped of all its parts except the glass walls. They remain intact, so all the owner now has to do is to restore the roof and trimmings. The glass company now has 15 salesmen on the road and hundreds of dealers are handling the product. This factory may mean much more to Muncie than anybody now suspects. . . . . . . Delaware County has no Republican candidate for the nomination for national representative, this year, and no candidate before the Republican state convention, which, being interpreted in the language of politics, makes it the logical home of the Tenth District’s party chairman. Now to find a candidate for that job who will be suitable to all of the old-time factionists. Then maybe Delaware will be given the job. The present district chairman is Elmer Crull, Richmond, and Richmond has two candidates for the congressional nomination. . . . . . . A young rabbit sitting hunched against the warm bricks on the outside of a chimney at Otto Carmichael’s home, when Michael, the household’s Blue Cairn terrier came along, jumped up fairly into the little dog’s face. By the time Michael recovered from his fright, the bunny was a block away, but the dog gave a futile chase, anyway. Michael, angry as a dog can ever become, returned to the front yard and set upon a messenger boy coming up the walk. "I guess Michael thought he at least could catch a messenger boy," observed his owner. . . . . . . Easter also "comes but once a year." In spite of the recent inclement weather, Muncie merchants, who stocked heavily, say Easter buying has been better than in many years and they expect a rush the remainder of the week. . . . . . . Central High girl was awarded a watch for her essay on "The Importance of Time." Trouble with time is it is important when you don’t want it to be — say, about 7 a. m. . . . . . . Suggested subject for the Chamber of Commerce’s town meeting at which civic affairs will be discussed: "What Makes You Think the Man You Voted for KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE the Job He's Asking For?" . . . . . . In the matter of Coble’s Fisherman’s Calendar, published in Tuesday’s Muncie Press, my observation is not only that the fish bite best the week before you get there and the week after you leave, but that the poor fish who drive a hundred miles to catch them will bite any time . . . . . . Often have wondered why some of Muncie’s excellent lawyers were not candidates for the appellate and supreme court judgeships. At least a dozen and maybe more are well qualified for these judicial positions. . . . . . . Just discovered how long it has been since Delaware County Republican factions failed to put up a fight for control of the county committee. Am informed this is the first year in the last 38 years.
