Owens-Illinois appoints new plant managers

Owens-Illinois Glass Company, American Structural Products Co. and Kaylo Division — Appointments of new plant managers have been announced by the company. C. H. Smith, presently manager at the Muncie, Indiana, plant of the American Structural Products Company, will retire December 31, 1950. His place will be taken by J. E. Bauer, now manager of the Berlin, N. J. plant of the Kaylo division. George Walker will move from the Kaylo plant at Sayreville, New Jersey, to become plant manager at Berlin. Mr. Smith's career with the company, all of it at Muncie, began in 1919 when he became paymaster and office manager of the Hemingray Glass Company, later a part of Owens-Illinois. From 1935 to 1937 he helped in the development of glass block, from both the manufacturing and sales standpoints. For the past thirteen years, during which period American Structural Products Company was established, Mr. Smith has been plant manager.

Mr. Bauer also began his career at Muncie, as the plant's first personnel director in 1923, later serving in the shipping and sales departments. Like Mr. Smith he was active in the pioneering of glass block. In 1938 he was named service and traffic manager. He became manager at the Columbus, Ohio, plant of American Structural Products Company in 1947, and moved to the Kaylo Division insulation and building products plant at Berlin one year later.

Mr. Walker has been with the company since 1932, starting in the forming department of the glass block operation at the Columbus plant. He served in various capacities there until 1938 when he was transferred to the Clarion, Pennsylvania, plant as purchasing agent. Returning to Columbus in 1942, he served successively as purchasing agent and superintendent of packing, warehousing and shipping. He moved to Sayreville in 1949, acting first as night production supervisor and then production superintendent.
