Researcher notes:The K. of L is the Knights of Labor, a Union labor organization which later was absorbed into the American Federation of Labor. It is likely some Hemingray employees were members. In 1887, Hemingray patented and produced a glass matchsafe in the shape of an anvil marked K. of L.
