WITH A BRICK

Boys at Hemingrays Have a

Murderous Fight.

SKULL OF ONE CRUSHED

By Sixteen-Year-Old Will Thornburg, the

Victim Being Charles Brown,

Colored — Assailant Jailed.

William Thornburg, aged sixteen, employed at the Hemingray glass factory was jailed last night at 12 o'clock by Patrolman Deems, and before he is released may have to answer to the charge of murder.

At an early hour yesterday morning Thornburg and Charles Brown, a colored carry-out boy, aged seventeen, employed at the same factory, had a fight, and the former threw a brick, which crushed in the skull on the forehead of the colored boy over the left eye, making a very dangerous wound.

The colored boy claims that Thornburg was about to assault another boy and that he interfered. Thornburg tells a different story, to the effect that the colored boy was attempting to assault him when he threw the brick in self-defense.

The strange part of the affair is the fact that Brown walked to his home north of the Orphans' home, a distance of two miles from the factory, and then walked to the office of Dr. Vinton yesterday afternoon to have the wound examined for the first time. The wonder is that it did not kill him before medical aid was secured.

Dr. Vinton Accompanied the boy to the office of Drs. Kemper & Kemper, where Drs. Poland and Trent were called, and the five physicians dressed the wound. A gash was cut over the left eye to the skull bone, and was fully four inches in length. Under this the doctors found that the skull had been crushed and that the fracture was even longer than the cut, and the broken bones were bearing on the brain. This required the most skilled work to repair, and the young man was sent to his home in the Meeks ambulance last night. What the result of the injury will be time will tell, but death would not surprise the attending physicians.
