CITY AFFAIRS.

Proceedings of Meeting Held by the Council

Last Night.

The Members Present and Transacted the

Business That Came Before Them

A Short Session.

Ten members of the city council were present last evening when the meeting was called to order by Mayor Cromer. No time was wasted in transacting the business that came before the body and consequently the session proved one of short duration.

Resolutions for the improvement of Seventh street between Kinney and Liberty streets and Dwight street between Seventh and Eighth streets were adopted.

Mrs. J. Mohler petitioned for permission to build a brick side walk in front of his property on Washington street between Beacon street and Ohio avenue. It was granted.

The matter of improving the side walk on the south side of Washington street between Liberty and Cherry streets was referred to the councilman of that ward to report at next meeting.

The judiciary committee reported favorably on the report of the city commissioners regarding the vacation of an alley running from Charles street north between Mound and Powers streets. Their report was concurred in.

The semi monthly report of Engineer Wood showed an expenditure of $1,326.04. It was ordered placed on record.

Several weeks ago the Associated Charities petitioned the council for the donation of $200to be used in placing the Pingree method into operation in Muncie for the benefit of the deserving poor. The matter was referred to the city attorney and last night he reported that he could find nothing in the statutes that would justify him in instructing the council to grant the petition. He further stated that the county commissioners had the power to make the donation and should they do so, the city would stand its share. His report was concurred in by the council.

Two bids for the improvement of Eighth street from Beacon to Penn street were opened, and as it was found that Contractors Mock & Baker were the lowest bidders, the contract was awarded to them. A. M. Shuttleworth was the other bidder.

After allowing the following bills Council adjourned:
