Money Under False Pretense —

Liable to Arrest

Last evening The Morning News received the following interesting communication:

To the Merchants of Muncie:

We desire to give warning that certain unscrupulous parties are now selling "ball tickets," purporting to be given under the auspices of the Glass Workers' and Iron Workers' unions of Muncie. We, the undersigned, denounce the scheme as false and wholly without our support or permission.

A. J. Evans, secretary F. U. 23, A. F. G. W.

Samuel Wireback, president of Muncie Lodge No. 20, A. A. of I. and S. W.

Carl Louck, chairman of Joint Preceptors of Window G. W.

John Kennedy, president Unity Lodge No. 7, A. A. of I. and S. W.

Joseph Cahill, president pro tem Branch 12, G. B. B. of A.

Ed Conroy, president Local No. 1, G. G. P. L.

S. C. Stancliffe, president Local No. 91, A. F. G. W. U.

This communication is the result of the general display of a card which reads as follows, and had been distributed over the city:

"First Grand Ball to be given by Iron and Glass workers of Muncie, at Shirk's hall, Thursday evening April 19,1897. Music by Muncie city orchestra. Admission 50 cents. Objections characters not admitted." In addition to the card several men are alleged to have been soliciting the merchants of the city for the sale of tickets for the ball, alleging that it is to be a benefit to the labor unions, and it is on this score that the objections are raised by the heads of labor organizations, when the ball is to be for personal pain [sic] gain.

The same racket has been worked heretofore, and a short time ago the union men warned the merchants through this paper to watch out for this class of imposition. The identity of the promoters is not known, but Superintendent of Police Baldwin says he will attempt to find who they are, and if they are making false representations to secure money he will cause their arrest and prosecution at once.
