Religion In the Council

Chamber — Houses Must Be

Numbered — Other Business

of the Council.

All members, excepting Haymond, Zook and Mitchell, were present last night when Mayor Cromer called the city council to order. Clerk Elrod entertained the aldermen several minutes by reading the minutes of the last meeting.

The first business of the meeting was the matter of numbering the houses and naming the streets. Crabbe stated that the street committee had held a meeting and granted Thomas Slinger and John Aydelotte the contract for putting up the names and numbers. Johnson moved that the city clerk be instructed to notify the citizens through the newspapers that there is an ordinance requiring the people to have their houses numbered and that after March people who do not have numbers on their houses will be prosecuted. Carried.

ANOTHER TELEPHONE COMPANY.

City Clerk Elrod presented to the mayor an ordinance granting to the Indiana Telephone and Construction Company leave and license to erect poles in the streets of Muncie and to furnish all persons in said city telephone service. The ordinance was not read but referred to the ordinance committee, the mayor and the city attorney.

Dr. Ried read his report for the month of January. Births, males 11, females 10; deaths, males 8, females 7. The report was placed on file.

RELIGION IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER.

Several colored citizens appeared before the council and asked that they be given access to the council chamber in which to hold religious services. Chief Shepp arose and stated that as the firemen had to sleep in the adjoining room he did not like to see the request granted. The firemen are often out all night and are compelled to sleep during the day. The noise is so great that they can not sleep. Johnson moved that the matter be referred to the committee on public buildings, but this was defeated. Porter moved that they be granted the right to hold meetings in the council chamber one hour in the morning and evening for four weeks on condition they keep the room in order and do not annoy the firemen. Carried.

Moreland stated that the residents of Avondale were still without a sufficient supply of gas. The question was discussed by several of the members but no action was taken.
