MASS MEETING

Last Night a Great Success

and Well Attended.

MUNCIE’S HOSPITALITY.

We Will Entertain the

Veterans in Perfect Manner

Sure to Please — The

Committees.

A large number of citizens met in the circuit court room and were called to order at 8 o’clock by Dr. G. W. H. Kemper and Mayor Cromer was called to the chair. Upon motion F. J. Claypool was unanimously elected secretary.

The chair requested Major Wildman to state the object of the meeting, which he did in a few brief remarks, ending by turning the meeting over to the persons present.

State Commander, Hon. A. O Marsh, was then called upon to address the meeting in his official capacity. His appearance upon the platform was greeted with applause. Commander Marsh, in his remarks, said that he felt sure that the patriotism and hospitality of the city would prompt the citizens to entertain her brave visitors in as good a manner as they had ever received. He covered the subject of the number of visitors in both the G. A. R. and W. R. C. branches and also the requirements that would be necessary for their entertainment The most of the visitors will arrive Tuesday night and by Wednesday noon there will be at least 5,000 visitors upon our streets. These must all be provided for. The National Commander will be present on Wednesday evening to participate in the camp fires.

At Lafayette Commander Marsh said that proper arrangements were not ample. Three places should be prepared for holding of the camp fires. In closing Commander Marsh expressed his entire confidence in the ability of Muncie to take care of her visitors.

Mrs. Rainsford, of Indianapolis, State President of the W. R. C., followed in a happy little speech. Her remarks teemed with gems of patriotism and she received frequent applause. The speaker said that she thought that at least 500 ladies of the Relief Corps would be present. She outlined the work that would be necessary to accomodate these female visitors.

The secretary then read the list of committees selected to undertake the various branches of the work. These committees are as follows:

An (*) asterisk denotes chairman; a (†) dagger denotes secretary.

After the reading of the names of the various committees the chairman of each made a report of the progress that had been made by their respective committees and all were certain that so far as their work would contribute the encampment would prove a great success.

The assistant adjutant general, of the state, R. M. Smock, then made a few remarks in regard to the work and several speeches were made by local parties. All spoke confidently of the ability of the city to care for the brave old soldiers during their stay with us and if Muncie does not make a great success of this encampment it will not be the fault of Muncie.

It was announced last night that the date of the encampment has again been changed, this time to the 27th and 28th of March.

At adjournment no time was set but it is probable that an other mass meeting will be held in the near future.

COMING

A delegation from the G. A. R. posts at Winchester will arrive in the city this evening to arrange for their sleeping accommodations during the State encampment to be held in this city in March. It is estimated that there will be 500 veterans in attendance from Randolph county on this occasion.
