HE OWED AND

SO HE PAID —

INTO the office of the Hemingray Glass Company, yesterday, came Russell Fisher, a business man of Dayton, O., who called for his bill for a shipment of ginger ale bottles and when it was presented laid down in cash the amount $360.45. He did not ask that payment of the bill be extended on account of the bank holiday; he did not suggest that the company accept his check which might be good some time or other, nor seek in any other way to delay payment.

He had bought and used the bottles, he owed for them, the bill was due and he paid it. He could have said that he could not pay because of the banking situation, or he could have given a check payable at some indefinite time and the creditor company would have had to take his word for it, but apparently the only thought in his mind was that this money was due the Hemingray Company on that date and ought to be paid.

This case is cited as an unusual example, but it should not be unusual. Of course it is true that many have found it impossible to pay their bills in the last few days who ordinarily do so promptly, but it is sadly to be feared that many others are using the bank holiday as an excuse for keeping money in their pockets that they should use in paying their honest debts.

This man Fisher will not lose by this transaction. He is likely to have credit some time when he needs it and when others cannot get it.
