INDUSTRIAL PLANTS LIVE FACTORS FOR CITY Chamber of Commerce Gathering Statistics of Products and Pay Rolls There are feu people in Long Beach who have any real idea of the business and commercial industries located on or in the vicinity of the inner harbor and how much they contribute to the prosperity and growth of Long Beach. In order to secure intelligent information on this subject the Chamber of Commerce through its manufacturing committee has just started a research campaign to secure reliable and accurate statistics of the products and payrolls of industrial plants in the harbor district This information will be given to the public as it is obtained. In order to arouse interest in their efforts the C. of C. will award a prize of $25 to the person making the closest guess as to the average aggregate monthly pay roll of all industries determined by these reports. These estimates must be filed with Secretary Bishy on or before July 31, by which time one half of the statements will have been published. The Telegram will publish these statements today, the one below being from the California Class Insulator company: Amount invested, $100,000. Number employed, 65. Average wage, $2.60. Total Payroll, $4000 monthly. Yearly output, $200,000. Probable future growth — At present insulators and soda water bottles. Expect to put in machinery to make flint ware and amber, and then business will be doubled. Business only limited by facilities. The output of the Glass Company is not consumed locally, and therefore each sale brings in foreign money. One car of insulators has just been shipped to Pocatello, Ida., another to San Antonio, Tex., another to Newport, Ida., A carload of insulators sells from $600 to $750 according to the class of insulator. The Pacific Electric Ry. Co., the Southern Pacific R. R. Co., the Northwestern Pacific, the Santa Fe, the Pacific Light and Power Co., the Southern California Edison Co., purchase their entire supplies from our local Glass Company. The company has just exported one carload to Manila and are negotiating now with parties in China and Honolulu. |
