WHAT IT WAS. — The old shanty on Foley's Commons, down below the glass-works, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon about four o'clock. That was what was the matter with alarm-box 28. The Department was quickly there, but not in time to save the rotten old nuisance. It was formerly the residence of the Garrishes (Old Dry Gash as the poor old man was called), but was latterly occupied by a nest of darkies. These moved out yesterday morning, and Chief Glore suspects that the decent neighbors set the place afire to prevent any further settlement there. Whoever did it did a meritorious act. The whole trap was worth possibly $20 for kindling wood — nothing else and nothing more. Barber Jackson owned it.
