MEN AND MATTERS.

One of the firm of Marshall Bros., of Pittsburg, one of the large iron handling concerns of the Smoky City, was in Cincinnati yesterday in the person of Mr. George V. Marshall. Mr. Marshall is a friend of Mr. D. C. Hemingray, by whom he was introduced to a number of prominent Cincinnatians. Mr. Marshall was relating quite an interesting incident of the past summer yesterday. Not long ago he read in a Southern paper a note of the finding at Port Royal. N. C., of a spur that had evidently been worn during the war. The rowel was made from a silver quarter, and on the quarter had been engraved the name "Newell." Mr. Marshall's interest was excited immediately, and he began to look up the old war records. He found in the list of names of those who had enlisted in a volunteer regiment from Pennsylvania the name of an R. C. Newell, and he addressed a note to the publisher of the paper in which he had read the notice, advising him to send a copy of the paper to the address that he found after the name in the roster. This was done, and the owner of the spur was found to be the very same Mr. R. C. Newell, who is Superintendent of a large iron works near Philadelphia. This reminiscence was called up yesterday on account of the fact that Mr. Marshall stopped off in Cincinnati on his way to Chickamauga.
