EMPLOYMENT FOR

HUNDREDS OF MEN

Chamber of Commerce Is

Successful After Many

Weeks of Labor

Two more industrial enterprises have come to Long Beach because of the exceptional commercial advantages to be found here. One is the California Glass Insulator Company that now has its headquarters in Los Angeles, and the other is a newly organized corporation that will engage in the manufacture of novelty match boxes probably under the name of the American Novelty Company.

The glass company will engage in the general manufacture of glass and glassware that will employ upwards of 500 men. The other company will employ a lesser number, but already its officers have brought three families here, the heads of which are to engage with them in the business.

Both establishments will be located in the Long Beach harbor district, where they will enjoy the exceptional advantages of both railroad and ocean transportation.

An investment of upwards of a quarter of a million of dollars will be represented in both enterprises and their holdings when they are in operation, which will in all probability be before the close of the first month of next year.

New Making Process

A few years ago this new structural glass was practically unknown, to day it is playing a huge part in the construction of every modern building.

The new process by which this company will manufacturer reinforced plate glass will reduce the cost 33 per cent.

In view of the rapid development of this Great Western empire, the manufacture of glass in the city may develop into a huge industrial proposition.

This window light department, when ready for operation, will employ between 400 or 500 men.

The construction and operation of the several units will follow each other as rapidly as conditions and development permit, 18 months to three years being the estimated time.

Ready in February

A letter from the Chamber of Commerce To the Pacific Electric railway will call for the construction of the 800 feet of spur track just as soon as the working gang of the Pacific Electric can be transferred to the site.

The construction of the plant will in all probability begin in the very near future, and is to be completed on or before February 1, 1912.

Plans and specifications for the factory buildings are completed and already bids are being received. Two or more of the local contractors are figuring on them.

General manager frist is now in the east completing contracts for machinery, which will be ready for shipment to Long Beach about December 1.

Special Advantages Here

On account of climatic conditions, particularly advantageous to the glass company, Long Beach should bid fair to be the glass manufacturing center of the Pacific Coast. The minimum cost of fuel and the unlimited supply of high grade silica sand, together with the assurance of the perfect climactic conditions, glass of a very high grade and maximum strength can be manufactured here on an equal basis with the east.

Eastern factories invariably closed from July to September 1, inclusive. The heat of the furnace is very great, and this combined with the heat and humidity of the summer makes the closing of the glass factories imperative. Because of this condition in the east, about 1/4 of the working year is lost. In the even climate of Long Beach it is possible to work the entire year.

Location of Glass Sand.

The sand deposit is at the Bixby ranch at Horseshoe Bend in Orange County. There is an unlimited supply of very high grade silica sand. The value of this sand deposit only recently became known. The glass companies operating along the western coast are compelled to import sand from Belgium or ship across the country from Indiana, which makes it probable that any glass manufacturing concern which will locate on this coast will be in this vicinity.

Well Known Men.

The California Glass Insulator Company has a liberal charter, permitting the manufacture of all lines of glass wear and glass working machinery. The management of the company has been entrusted to well known businessmen of Los Angeles and command the confidence of the entire community. The president, Jules Kaufman, is a prominent grain merchant of Los Angeles. The vice president is EH fosdick, a well known and leading glass specialist Of Los Angeles. The treasurer is John Morris, proprietor and manager of the new method laundry of Los Angeles.

Active Managers.

The general manager is Robert P. Frist, who is an expert glass man of broad experience covering a period of 20 years of actual experience in all branches of the glass and glass machinery industry, who has been identified with the most prominent glass concerns in the United States and in the actual building of glass furnaces and improved machinery for every branch of the glass business. Mr. Frist is largely interested in the company, will make his permanent residence in Long Beach and will devote his entire time to the business.

Associated with Mr. Frist is Stanley S. Stonaker, secretary of the company and a resident of Long Beach. Mr. Stonaker's commercial experience has been in the glass business.

In addition to the above officers, who are directors in the glass company, are Directors John G. Orth, proprietor of the Berlin Dye Works of Los Angeles; Arthur G. Munn, a native of California and a retired newspaper man and now a capitalist in Los Angeles, and William Schade, who is a retired contractor and builder resident of Los Angeles.

Match Box Factory.

In the same unostentatious manner but coupled with the same energy and persistency, the Chamber of Commerce went after the new novelty matchbox enterprise. The same patience and intelligent application was required to reach a satisfactory arrangement with the men behind this enterprise.

The Chamber of Commerce is providing for the rental of a space 30x40 feet in the Rotary Gas Engine Company's plant in the harbor district, is to furnish the requisite electrical power, is building two bake ovens, and has agreed to pay the rental on a stamping machine for a period of six months.

The officials of this new enterprise have not yet definitely decided upon the name of their corporation, but it is expected that it will be known as the American novelty company. The matchbox that the company will manufacture is a distinct novelty from one which it is believed will command a large sale. It is not only a Novelty but a useful article.
