THE FIRE LAST NIGHT. — At quarter to eight last evening, the fire bells sounded the alarm of what proved to be a most destructive conflagration. The glassware establishment of Messrs, Gray, Hemingray & Brother, No, 29 East Second street, north side, between Main and Sycamore, was the scene of the disaster. How the fire originated was unknown, though it was first discovered in the rear of the first floor. The flames took but a few moments in reaching to every corner of the building, owing to the presence, as we were told, of a large amount of coal oil and burning fluid. The Fire Department was the spot promptly, as usual, and the firemen. working with their accustomed energy, soon extinguished the flames, although they had possession of every one of the four stories. What the loss was and to what extent it is covered by insurance we wire unable to ascertain at the time, not being able to see any person acquainted with the facts. It is very heavy, though, as the stock is almost an entire loss. The building too, is almost a complete wreck.

The rear of this burning mass is very close to the rear of the ordnance depot on Sycamore street, between Second and Pearl streets, and as this be the second fire which has occurred in this dangerous vicinity, people will question the propriety, at least, of having, in the center of the business portion of the city powder enough to blow half the city into the air, should it be ignited.
