A MATINEE MUSICALE.

The regular meeting of the Matinee Musicale was held in the annex of the First Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. The program was under the direction of Miss Love and Mrs. McDowell, pianists, assisted by Mrs. Ellzabeth Bishop, Miss Nelle Jewett, Mr. Colvin and Mr. Benham, vocalists. One of the last numbers of the program was the selection entitled "Oh Love, Thy Help," a recitative and aria from Saint-Saens' "Sampson and Delilah," sung by Miss Nelle Jewett. Miss Jewett's tone production in this difficult piece was excellent. She also gave a charming rendering of DeKoven's "Poppies." Mrs. Love and Mrs. McDowell gave great pleasure to the audience by their two ensemble numbers, "Variations on Theme from Bethoven" and "Polacca Brilliante," by Weber. Mr. George Benham's selection, Clay's "Gypsy Johns" and "Only in Dreams" by DeKoven, were well received. He sings with a style that shows cultivation and the manner in which he sang the first number proved his ability as a singer. Mr. Benham was accompanied by Miss Hemingray. Mr. Colvin's rich baritone voice never showed to a better advantage than in the selections, "Love's Rosary" and "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes," "Calm as the Night" was sung as duet by Mrs. Elizabeth Bishop and Mr. Colvin. Mrs. Bishop's soprano voice blended admirably with the baritone voice of Mr. Colvin. The next meeting will be held next Wednesday afternoon and will be in charge of the third division under the leadership of Mrs. S. L. Potter.
