Memorial exercises similar to those which are annually observed by the Elks' lodge were held in this city Sunday afternoon by the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks, No. 45, in the Wysor Grand opera house. The ceremony was attended by hundreds. The members of the lodge marched from their apartments in the Patterson block to the opera house. Here the services were opened by ritualistic exercises performed by Everett Moffit, grand exalted ruler. Rev. Mr. Carter, of the First Baptist church pronounced the invocation and the Orpheus Quartet sang. Memorial exercises on account of the deaths of Erville D. Bishop and Ralph [sic] Robert C. Hemingray were held at some length, these two lodgemen having died since the memorial services were last year. Frank L. Gass spoke of the life of the former and R. S. Gregory, the latter. Both delivered fitting and touching eulogies on the lives of the departed. Mention also was made of the deaths of C. D. Beemer, J. R. Erwin, G. L. Lenon, E. Will Kirk and J. A. Grissell. Miss Josephine Jones followed the address of Mr. Gregory with a violin solo of exquisite sweetness. The memorial address was delivered by Rev. Mr. Oxtoby of the First Presbyterian church. The minister spoke with great feeling and eloquence on the spirit that prompted a memorial celebration. Mrs. Ida Gray Scott sang the Intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rusticana" after the address of Rev. Mr. Oxtoby. The Orpheus quartet sang "When the Mist Rolled Away," and the audience and quartet sang the doxology. The services closed with a benediction by Rev. Mr. Carter. |
