PRESIDENT’S DAY.

It was Appropriately Observed by

Members of the Art Students'

League Yesterday.

One of the most important social events of the season was "President’s Day" observed by the members of the Art Students' League at the home of Mrs. A. L. Johnson, 330 East Washington street, Monday afternoon. By a special invitation from the president, Mr. Ardashes Keleian, of Indianapolis, gave a fine exhibit of phyrography and Oriental rugs. He described in an interesting manner how the rugs were made. He said it often required years of labor in the making of one rug as they are all made by hand. The greatest skill and patience is used by these people of the Orient in order that the true color schemes and designs may be effected and that in weaving these rugs the weaver must choose a certain emblem, as for instance, if a girl desires to give her sweetheart a present, and he should happen to be a hunter, she would weave him a fine rug with an emblem of a bird on it. this emblem being characteristic of his pursuit in life. These rugs in ancient times were used only in royal palaces for royal purposes, while now they are used in thousands of homes. Terra cotta, maroon, rose red, turquoise blue, golden yellow, black and white are the favorite colors used by the weavers. Among the most beautiful rugs are those of silk and cashmere. The prayer rugs are also exquisite in their make-up. Mr. Keleian warned the women against buying an article from some one who does not know as much about it as they themselves, and related several amusing anecdotes characteristic of women. Among the invited guests were Mesdames Baker, Hemingray, Durham, Wall, Spilker, Arthur Patterson, Dickey, Mateer, Benham Clarence Keiser, J. L. Smith, of Terre Haute; J. H.
