Mrs. Lottie Campiglio, the mother of the beautiful Cincinnati girl, Carlotta Hemingray, who was said to have committed suicide at the Knickerbocker Hotel, at San Francisco, is loath to believe that her daughter shot herself, and has asked the police of the Golden Gate City to investigate.

Just like since the news of her daughter's death was first brought to her by THE ENQUIRER reporter she has refused to see her friends and with the photograph of the beautiful dead girl on her lap she sits in tears, calling in vain: "My baby, my little girl, I can't believe you fired the shot. I won't believe it."

Yesterday afternoon she dictated A telegram to the Chief of Police of San Francisco, asking him to investigate carefully and notify her immediately. The telegram read.

"Chief of Police, San Francisco, Cal. I can't believe that my daughter shot herself. Investigate and let me know the truth at once. Have body embalmed and sent at once to me.

                                                                                                                    MRS. LOTTIE CAMPIGLIO,

                                                                                                                   "636 WEST FOURTH street."

The telegram was dictated by the sorrowing mother upon the advice of a Mrs. Smith, a close friend, who since the news reached her from California has been in attendance upon her.

REFUSES TO BELIEVE

“I shall never believe that my daughter fired that shot,” she said yesterday. “She was always so bright and happy, a disposition that did not give way under reverses or disappointments. She was not despondent or hopeless even when she wrote me of her husband's treatment of her. I cannot believe it was her hand that has left me without her, and I shall demand an investigation. I don't want to accuse anybody, but I want the police to look into this case. It does not look straight to me, and I must be satisfied. My daughter would never have taken her life.

“I blame this all to Carlotta’s stepfather. He treated her badly, so badly. He would not speak to her, and it was through him that she had to leave me to this fate so far from me. It almost broke my heart when she had to leave, but he treated her so badly. I should not tell this but she is my flesh and blood, and is more to me than all the rest in life.

“I wrote a telegram Sunday, intending to send it to the Chief of Police of San Francisco, but my husband objected, and it was destroyed. I am satisfied that an investigation should be made and I have demanded it.

WAS HIS WIFE

Mrs. Campiglio is convinced that her daughter was the wife of Robert Hemingray, of this city. She says her daughter never deceived her. She says she received a letter saying that they had been married in Chicago, and since then she had written to her, both to the Palace Hotel, in San Francisco, and the Knickerbocker Hotel of that city, in the name of Mrs. Carlotta Hemingray, and all letters had reached her.

The death of the daughter it is feared by intimate friends may have serious results in the mother's case. She has refused to take a bite of food or to sleep since Sunday morning, and her haggard, careworn looks show how deep seated her grief really is. She refuses to go under a physician's care and stubbornly refuses to take nourishment.

“I should choke if I attempted to eat, she said yesterday, and then went into a spell of grief that was pitiable to witness. It is feared by those attending her that she will not recover from the shock unless she is forced to care for her own physical condition. She is afraid someone will bury the body of her daughter in California and she will not be able to look upon her face.

If her orders are obeyed the remains will probably reach this city about Thursday of this week. They will be cremated, in accordance with her wishes. Before this is done the mother wants the dead girl's former friends in the city to see her. She asked those near her constantly if Carlotta's face will be disfigured from the shot, fearing that her beauty, of which the mother was so proud, has disappeared.
