Body of Joe Flora of Dunkirk

Discovered By Rabbit Hunters

in South Muncie.

Joe Flora, 47, a Rumanian glass-worker, of Dunkirk, Ind., was found dead in a patch of weeds near the Hemingray glass factory, on Mace­donia avenue shortly before 10 a. m. Saturday. The body is believed to have been there since Wednesday afternoon. Coroner Downing of York-town, who conducted an inquest gives alcoholism as the cause of death.

Charles McCarthy, 12, residing at 1422 East Ninth street, and Melvin and George Byrd, brothers, aged 9 and 12 years, respectively, residing at 1110 East Ninth street, found the body while searching for rabbits. They gave the alarm, and notified the police. Chief of Detectives Fred W. Pickett and Officer Mann investi­gated.

The body was brought to the Moffitt-Groman undertaking parlors on East Jackson street and prepared for burial. No funeral arrangements have been made.

A receipt for interurban car fare from Dunkirk to Muncie indicates that Flora came here some time Tuesday. Brother countrymen, say they had not seen him since he accepted em­ployment in the Hemingray factory at Dunkirk four weeks ago. Prior to leaving Muncie he roomed at the home of Joe Morris, 2019 East Willard street.

A quart bottle, which had been filled with whiskey, was found lying near Flra's [sic] Flora’s body and offers the evidence that alcoholism brought death. Work­men in the factory believe Flora is the same foreigner for whom the police scoured the southeast part of Muncie Tuesday night after receiving a report of unbecoming conduct on his part.

The foreigner was clad in tattered clothes, and there is every indication that death came several days ago, probably Wednesday. Only a few papers and 10 cents in money was found on his person.

Rumanians, acquainted with the dead man, say he is married and has a family living in Rumania. They say he came to Muncie ten years ago, and has always followed glassworker’s trade.
