QUICK WORK PREVENTS
BAD FIRE AT FACTORY
Batch Room at Hemingray’s
Slightly Damaged —
Discovered by Watchman
Timely discovery of a fire in the roof of the batch room of the Hemingray Glass Company, in South Macedonia avenue, about 10:40 o’clock last night probably prevented a great loss. The fire started from a defective flue and was burning briskly when it was discovered by a watchman. A large hole was burned in the roof around the flue and the loss was estimated at about [dollar:$25].
The batch room is a frame structure more than 400 feet long and had the fire gotten a headway it would probably have destroyed the building. Several tons of soda ash, sand and limestone are stored in this room.
Workmen laid a line of factory hose and sounded an alarm to the Central station at 10:45 o’clock. Firemen from the Central and Nos. 2 and 4 stations responded. It was some time before the fire was extinguished because a tin roof covered the wooden roof that was afire.
