GLASS TANK BREAKS,

LOSS OVER $2,500

Damages estimated at $2,500, was caused at the Hemingray Glass Company’s plant on South Macedonia Avenue Sunday night, when a forty-five ton tank gave way.

The tank, in which the glass is heated to a mass, broke at the bottom, permitting the glass to pour out. Fire men played several lines of water on the glass for several hours and at noon today it had not been cooled sufficiently to permit repair work to be started.

The tank, which was of clay, was built only a few weeks ago and the fire had been going only a few days. Three departments were called to the factory at 9:15 o'clock Sunday evening and worked steadily until about 2:30 o’clock Monday morning.

Worked in Shifts.

The firemen held a steady stream of water on the flowing glass and finally were able to stop the flow of the glass which was heated at a 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

At 1:14 o'clock Monday morning the city water pressure was turned off and a line of water from a reserve factory tank was used by the “smoke eaters" in stopping the flow.

Firemen working in two shifts under the tank were almost exhausted by the fumes and were forced to work in the dark. The oil lamps failed to burn, due to the density of the air.

"The damage Sunday night by the bursting of the molten tank will in no way hinder the production of the plant," W. P. Zimmerman, secretary of the Hemingray Company, announced Monday afternoon.

Mayor John C. Hampton, assisted by a member of the police department, served hot coffee to the firemen.
