BREWERS SEEK
BOTTLE BIDS
But Prices Too Unstable to
Warrant Contracts.
The Hemingray Glass Company is not accepting contracts for beer bottles made optional upon the legalization of beer, although such contracts are being offered by present bottlers of near beer, Philip H. McAbee, president of the company, said Monday.
In their unconditional contracts, near beer bottlers and brewers are purchasing bottles upon the basis of last year’s sales. However, they are attempting to insert clauses in their contracts calling for as much as 50 times their present bottle demands, made conditional upon the return of beer.
Mr. McAbee said the glass company could not accept the optional contracts because it is impossible to estimate what the price of bottles will be in the event beer is legalized. Raw materials are now selling at too low a figure, Mr. McAbee believes, and prices doubtless will rise if beer is returned.
