Alexander to Retire After
52 Years in Glass Factory
When Charles H. Alexander, better known as "Squint," retires Monday, June 30, as superintendent of the Kimble Glass Company plant in Muncie, he will be leaving an industry with which he has been associated for 52 years.
"Squint" cut his first teeth on an old Hemingray insulator. Since he was 13 years old and lied a little about his age to get a job as a shop boy he has never strayed far from the man made volcanoes that are called glass furnaces.
He got his first job in 1900 with the Hemingray Glass Company, predecessor of the Kimble Glass Company, an Owens-Illinois Glass Company subsidiary.
STARTING as a carry-in and stick-up boy at [dollar:70 cents per day he worked himself up through many positions to that of superintendent, from which he is retiring.
There has always been a challenge in the glass business and always will be, “Squint” believes.
It has been hot. It has been rough. It has never been dull, he says.
To Mrs. Alexander, his wife, he gives unstinted credit for the encouragement she has given him throughout his career.
"IF IT HADN'T been for her, there were times when I would have thrown in the towel," he reports.
His son is Robert Alexander, supervisor of quality and specification at the Kimble plant in Muncie.
He also has a daughter, Mrs. Lois Hiron, who is employed in the personnel department of Warner Gear Company.
Monday will be named "Squint" Alexander Day at Kimble, Plant Manager John Bauer has announced.
