Aldermen Meet.

The Aldermen confirmed the appointments of Thomas Donnelly as Police and Fire Commissioner and Henry Brinker as Water Works Commissioner, at their meeting last evening.

The resolution granting the Hemingray Glass Company free water and exemption from taxation for five years paossed [sic] passed its second reading by a vote of 4 to 1. President Johnson ex­plained his nay vote by stating he is of the opinion that it is illegal to give away any water to any one.

A communication from E. S. Milter was read, requesting that the board allow him to pay his back taxes without the penalty being imposed, and promising faithfully on his word of honor that he would never again become delinquent. The matter was referred.

A motion to grant Messrs. Keily & McDer­mott, contractors on the new Courthouse, free water in the construction of that building, was adopted by a vote of 4 to 1, Johnson voting in the negative.

A resolution to give the City Auditor an as­sistant for ten days, at $3 a day, to aid him in arranging a large number of delinquent tax bills in ex-Solicitor Shaw's possession so that the books can be transferred to his successor, was ordered filed away indefinitely, The Auditor was instructed to hasten the work in connection with the City Solicitor.
