Saturday Night’s Fires.
There was a small fire Saturday evening in Moerlein's malt house, on Henry and Elm streets. Damage slight.
A general alarm was sounded from Box 9 at half-past 12 yesterday morning, and the engines were called to No. 143 West Second street, where a conflagration seemed imminent. The building was occupied by the Elgin Canning Company, the firm’s name being Bartels, Eaton & Swan, and the structure was owned by Mrs. Margaret L. Pollock. B. Meyers, of Fire Company No. 9, was thrown from a ladder to the ground, a distance of thirty feet, but luckily was only slightly injured. Assistant Chief Lew. Wisby was more seriously wounded than Meyers, by the falling ladder. Reuben Clark, runner of the Nines, was also hurt. The damage to the stock is about $3,000; Fully insured as follows; $1,000 in the Traders' Compoany, of Chicago, and $2,000 with John B. Thompson's agency, this city.
