Press, Whys, Center Chapel,

Gas Company Win.

Four of 12 teams entered in the local sectional of the state indepen­dent basketball tourney were elim­inated in first-round games, Tues-night at Wilson gymnasium. The Muncie Whys won over the First Baptists, 34 to 20; the Muncie Gas Company edged out the Yorktown Merchants, 21 to 18; the Hemingray quintet lost to Center Chapel, 13 to 32, and The Muncie Press five drubbed the Muncie K’s, 23 to 15.

Moulton Fulmer and Mick Davison, veteran hardwood performers, paced the Whys in their win over the Baptists. The Russellmen had piled up a 17-to-6 advantage at the half and displayed a brand of ball that may make them the district representatives in the state meet.

The Yorktown Merchants, trailing the Muncie Gas Company at the half, 6 to 15, staged a last-half rally that came within three points of giving them the victory. Art Beckner and Justice were best for the losers. Campbell paced the winners with eight points.

Center Chapel Coasts.

Center Chapel coasted to win from the Hemingray Bottle-Makers. Leading at the half, 14 to 10, the church team hit its stride in the final period to tally 18 points against 3. Each of seven men used by Center Chapel scored. Marks and Miller chalked up 12 of the glass company's 13 points.

The Press five had little trouble with the Muncie K's, moving to an 18-to-10 lead at the half. McKinzie, center, was high scorer for the winners. Casey, center, led the losers.

Two first-round and two semi­-final games will be played Thurs­day night at Wilson gym. At 7 p. m., the Polly Parrott five plays the Stoney Creek Independents. The Muncie Monarchs, fast colored team, meets the Delco-Remy cagers in one of the tourney's outstanding tilts.

The Gas Company aggregation and the Muncie Whys will tangle in the first semi-final game at 8:40 p. m. The Center Chapel and Mun­cie Press teams will clash in the final game of the evening.
