JOSEPH MENARD WHO

BADLY HURT COLORED

YOUTH IS FINED $75

Josehp [sic] Joseph Menard, arrested several days ago on a charge of assault and battery upon Lester Speaker, age 16 years, colored "carry in" boy at the Hemingray glass factory, entered a plea of guilty in city court Saturday morning and was assessed a fine and costs amounting to $75.

The trouble at the factory occurred when Speaker attempted to drink from a cup before Menard. The rule of the factory was that employes drink from the cup according to the positions which they hold. Speaker holds one of the least important positions and was supposed to drink last. The latter was in the hospital for several weeks after he had been struck over the head with an iron pipe in the hands of Menard.
