MALLEABLE PLANT

IN FULL OPERATION

Local Department Was

Started This Morning —

Midland Starts Monday.

The last department at the Whiteley malleable iron works was put in operation this morning and the plant is now running full force. The core and moulding departments were started Monday morning and it is expected that the run will be long and steady, for the resumption came before the last of the improvements at the plant was finished. It is stated that 1,500,000 shingles were required to replace the old roof over the entire building. This work was finished last night, and the plant is in good condition. A number of new lathes and other machinery have been installed, and the moulding department has been increased, enlarging the capacity considerably.

The roof over the building where the new turnbuckle plant will be installed at the Indiana iron works, has been completed, and the machinery which has been installed has been tested. The test was complete and successful, and it is expected that before the last of the machinery is installed, the first will be in steady operation. A number of new work men have arrived from Brazil.

The Nos. 1, 3, and 4 furnaces at the Hemingray works which have been idle for some time, will resume operations next week. The No. 2 furnace has been operated steadily, the workmen taking turns. A number of improvements have been made, and the plant will have a larger capacity than ever when the idle furnaces are placed in operation.

The repair work at the Ball Brothers' plants has practically been completed and it is expected that both the No. 1 and No. 2 factories will be started as soon as the manufacturers' committee and the wage committee from the G. B. B. A. reach an agreement. The conference is now on at Atlantic City, and is expected to be finished within another week. There will be a number of new machines in operation at the No. 1 factory which will do away with the boys. In the white liner department an automatic carrier will take the ware from one department to another, instead of having to handle it. However, those who have been employed at the plant will be given steady work, additional improvements increasing the force of workmen.

The news of the resumption of the Midland steel works on August 20, is being received by the local workmen, The plant has been idle since June 18. The resumption of the Midland Steel company's plant at this season of the year indicates that there is a steady demand for finished sheet steel, and it is the belief that the plant will be in operation throughout the winter, employing 500 or 600 men and boys.
