Annual Meeting of Window Glass and Bottle Makers. The window glass and bottle manufacturers of the United States held their annual meeting at Long Branch, N. J., week before last, extending over Tuesday and Wednesday. Both branches of the trade were represented by delegates from all the principal factories throughout the country. The window glass men held their meeting on Wednesday, at the West End Hotel. The meeting was called to order by the president, Frank L. Bodine, the roll being called by the secretary, E. R. Wood. It was found that the following firms were represented: Ely, Son & Hoyt, Clyde, N. Y. C. Getman, Cleveland, N. Y. Union Glass Co., Cleveland, N. Y. Baker Bros. & Co., Baltimore, Md. Swindell & Bros., Baltimore, Md. Wm. King & Bro., Baltimore, Md. Wm. McCully & Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. S. McKee & Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. Thos. Wightman & Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. R. C. Hemingray Glass Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. After the president had made his address, which was one of interest, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, F. L. Bodine, of Philadelphia; vice-president, Thos. Wightman, of Pittsburgh; secretary, E. R. Wood, of Philadelphia; treasurer, M. W. Watson, of Pittsburgh. After some discussion it was decided to advance the price on the first bracket for both single and double fifty cents, such advance to take effect at once. Then followed a long and animated discussion on the labor question, which consumed nearly all the time of the session, and without coming to any definite conclusion the meeting adjourned, subject to the call of the president. Though there was no official agreement, it was understood that the firing up would not take place this year before September 17. The general complaint was over production and poor prices, this with the large stock of window glass on hand (estimated to be about 500,000 boxes), and the uncertainty about the labor question caused many to feel rather blue over the future outlook. |
