McABEE HEADS ORGANIZATION To Plan Observance in Honor of George Washington. Philip W. McAbee, president of the Hemingray Glass Company, was chosen to head the Delaware County commission to make arrangements for the local observance of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Washington, at a special meeting held yesterday afternoon in the Muncie Chamber of Commerce building. J. H. Maxon was chosen vice-president, and the choice for the position of secretary was left to the new president. The meeting was opened by Mrs. M. A. Doran, of the state bi-centennial commission, and was presided over by Mr. Maxon. Upon the passage of a resolution, four members who represent organizations interested in the observance will be named to comprise a permanent executive board, together with the officers, and the representative of each unit will automatically act as a second vice-president of the county organization. Public Program Is Planned. Evident interest and enthusiasm was displayed on all sides yesterday at the meeting with sixty-five organizations. George B. Lockwood, publisher, presented the matter as a national undertaking in which each state of the Union will participate, and the meeting here was relative to the plans to be followed in a local observance. The shaping of the Delaware County unit follows that of the state organization, and several of those present yesterday voiced their sentiment favorably with regard to the formation and maintenance of the county organization. Not only will the civic clubs and other organizations in Delaware County observe the two hundredth anniversary next year, but a large public celebration in Muncie will be held when the weather permits. A parade will be featured, a probable historic pageant, speakers of national repute, and probably a banquet at night. |
