SUIT OF PETER C. CLEVENGER.

Note Indorsed by the Late Governor

Matthews Figures Prominently.

Peter C. Clevenger brought suit for $2,000 on a note which was indorsed by the late Governor Claude Matthews against his heirs, Mrs. Martha A. R. Matthews, his widow, and Mrs. Mary M. Ewing and Helen Somerville yesterday. The note was made by Clevenger to the Pendleton glass tube and pipe works, which was organized by J. O. Henderson and J. T. Fanning, and was indorsed by Mr. Matthews while he was in the Governor’s office. The concern proved a failure and after being placed in the hands of a receiver its securities were converted into cash. Clevenger was forced to satisfy the note and he is now bringing suit to secure a partial payment of the sum from the other indorsers.
