Mrs. Bradford Shinkle

Dies Near Erlanger.

Mrs. Mary Hemingray Shinkle, 81, wealthy philanthropist, and widow of the late Bradford Shinkle, widely known Covington capitalist, died at her home on the Dixie Highway, near Erlanger, Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

Mrs. Shinkle had been ill several days. Her relatives and friends became alarmed over her condition several weeks ago when she ceased taking nourishment regularly. She was afflicted with arthritis, the same malady that caused the death last Saturday of John Drew, famous actor.

Because of her great interest in all charitable enterprises and her personal interest in the lives of many northern Kentuckians, she will be greatly missed.

Generous Giver

Mrs. Shinkle was concerned particularly with the work done by the Covington Protestant Children's Home and the Salvation Army. She contributed liberally to the building of the new Children's home in Devou Park.

Memorial Hospital was made a possibility because Mrs. Shinkle in the beginning gave the Salvation Army the old Shinkle homestead on E. Second-st., Covington.

The homestead was used first as a House of Refuge and was converted later into a hospital. But about a year ago the structure was torn down to make way for the new and modern structure.

Of Hemingray Family

Mrs. Shinkle was a member of the Hemingray family which operated the Hemingray Glass Works in Covington 25 years ago. The plant has been moved since to Muncie, Ind.

She is survived by two sons, Clifford Shinkle, of 1811 Madison-rd., Cincinnati, chairman of the Board Directors of the Central Trust Co., Cincinnati, and president of the Cincinnati & Covington Bridge Co., and Bradford Shinkle, of St. Louis, and one grandchild, Frank D. Cross, Jr., Burton Woods-lane and Red Bud-av., Cincinnati. The latter's mother, Mrs. Camilla Shinkle Cross, died several years ago.

Mrs. Shinkle was a member of the First Baptist Church, Covington.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. from her home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
