FIRE. — The attempt which was frustrated the other evening was consumated [sic] consummated last night about 12 o'clock. Van Wie's carpenter shop, on Hammond-street, was again fired by some diabolical individual. At a great deal of risk a horse was rescued form the flames by throwing a coat over his head and forcing him through the blaze. The oil establishment adjoining, on the north, soon caught, and the glass store of Gray & Hemingray, on the south, was also speedily enveloped by the burning element.
The lard oil manufactory of C. Burkhardt was only slightly damaged.
The carpenter shop was almost entirely destroyed, nothing but the charred remnants of the frame being left.
The glass manufactory sustained a greater damage by removing the fragile ware, and by the progress of the fire before the flames were subdued by the speedy and effectual work of our unequaled fire department. Had a wind prevailed, there would have been some difficulty in suppressing the fire, which was so devised as to make a conflagration sure, if the object had not been arrested, and rendered only partial by a timely discovery.
