HURT IN BLAST

Hemingray Furnace

in Explosion.

The condition of Roy Cremean, 38, of 1413 South Brotherton St., who suffered a fractured skull in an explosion at the Hemingray Glass Company, where he is employed, yesterday afternoon, is improved, attaches of the Home Hospital said today.

The explosion was caused by the mixing of air with the producer gas which was being introduced into a glass furnace. Cremean was thrown against a truck by the force of the explosion.

Clarence McGibbney, 43, of 1219 Kirby Ave., also was injured by the explosion. He suffered a slight scalp wound, but after receiving emergency treatment at the hospital he returned to his work.

Officials of the company explained that the gas, which is manufactured at the plant, had been introduced into a huge pipe leading to the tank to provide heat for combining raw material into glass, when the explosion occurred.

Explosion doors placed along the pipe at regular lengths were blown open by the explosion and Cremean was standing near one of them, thus receiving the brunt of the blast. Several of the doors were splintered by the force of the explosion.

It was the first explosion of a serious nature at the Hemingray plant in the past four years.
