Big Business Increase
Is Reported.
CITY IS PREPARED
For Most Gala Day of
the Year.
When Santa Claus arrives in Muncie tonight and climbs down the chimneys of local homes he will find that Muncie merchants have done their part in lightening his burden.
A substantial increase over past years’ Christmas business was reported today. Toy merchants say there will be few disappointed children here when the package-opening time comes Tuesday morning.
For youngsters who aren’t lucky enough to get all the things they may want, something has already been done, as civic clubs have been busy for the past week entertaining the children of the city.
In the factories thousands of dollars in bonuses and insurance policies were presented employes. The Hemingray Glass Manufacturing Company today revealed that its Christmas present to its employes is the payment of [dollar:$248,000] in premiums on insurance policies.
Factories to Close.
In addition to bonuses and presents, practically every factory in the city will close for at least one day, and most of them were closed Monday also, giving the employes a chance to enjjoy [sic] enjoy the holiday.
Inmates of the county institutions, such as the jail, infirmary and the children’s home, have been the recipients of Christmas gifts and entertainments at the hands of several organizations in the city, and tomorrow noon will sit down to plentiful menus. At both the infirmary and the children’s home there will be Christmas programs.
The postoffice [sic] post office, city offices, excepting the fire and police departments; the banks, the Y. M. and the Y. W. C. A., the Delaware County Tuberculosis Association, the Red Cross office, the Social Service Bureau, the city library, the city schools, the Chamber of Commerce, business office and local stores will be closed tomorrow. Some of the public offices were closed today also.
