McAbee Punching

Cattle on Ranch

In Arizona Wilds

Report Muncie Man Is

Wearing Huge Hat.

Capt. P. B. Waterbury, Infantry Reserve instructor here, returned to Muncie Thursday night after two weeks in Arizona and Northern Mexico. He left Muncie with Col. Philip W. McAbee, but returned without him.

Colonel McAbee, Captain Waterbury reports, is on an Arizona cattle ranch, struggling around under the largest “10-gallon” hat stocked in Tucson. The ranch is the Bar O, 18 miles northeast of Tombstone, the nearest postoffice.

The ranch is situated under the cliffs of Dragon Mountain on an old Spanish trail and from its 5,500-feet elevation offers a view of 11 mountain ranges and valleys, plains and canyons.

Colonel McAbee needs the big hat in the daytime, with the sun sending the temperature to from 60 to 90 degrees, but at night, with the temperature from 30 to 50 degrees, the fireplace is more useful.

Guests are Limited.

Bar O Ranch is a "guest ranch." A guest ranch is sometimes known as a "dude ranch," but the Bar O isn't the type shown in the movies. The number of "guests" is limited to a dozen or so and there is no hotel. The business of cattle raising goes on as usual, according to Captain Waterbury, and if a guest wishes a guide to a specific place, he is at liberty to accompany the cowboys there — provided the cowboys have to go there anyway to brand calves or for other business.

An excellent rider, Colonel McAbee by this time probably is a full-fledged cattle puncher, Captain Waterbury guesses. Waterbury even predicts that the Colonel will be wearing chaps before his return.

Captain Waterbury served with the 25th infantry along the Arizona-Mexican border for five years, During the last two weeks he and Colonel McAbee have been visiting points at which he was stationed and other familiar country.
