To Be Honored Tonight
One of, the outstanding civic-industrial events of Muncie's year will be the seventh annual award dinner of the American Structrual [sic] Structural Products Company (Owens-Illinois) to be held Saturday at 7 p. m. in the Roberts ballroom.
The affair, beyond being one for congratulations and awards to plant leaders and longtime employes here, will celebrate 100 years in the glass industry of the company and its predesessor [sic] predecessor, the Hemingray Glass Company Readers of"Fifty Years Ago" notes frequently see the name of this company which, at the Muncie location, had one of the biggest glass factories of the country. The industry flourished in Muncie during gas boom days, when skilled glass blowers were among the highest paid workmen in town.
Employes, many of whom remember well the rough-and-tumble gas boom days in Muncie’s glass industry, will be special beneficiaries to-night. For 25 years' continuous service, gold watches will be awarded to William Armstrong, William Grown, Charles Clevenger, Henry Herbert, and Herbert S. Smith.
With Company 40 Years.
Frank Sapf, longest service employe, will receive an individual award pin for 40 years service. Other pins will go to William O. Myers, 35 years; Lester Hahn, Earl Hiatt, Sr., Harry L. Jones and Floyd McCormick, 30 years; Cecil Brown, Austin Collins and Ralph Marks, 20 years; Cecil Herbert and Benjamin Lacy, 15 years; and for ten years service, Charles Baker, Clifford Burton, Robert Collingsworth, Marcus Corn, Joseph Dame, David Dews, Hubert Dickens, Charles Fair, Joseph Haller, Harschel Harlan, Carl Hunnel, Clifford Hutchens, Homer Johnson, Mildred Phelps, Charles Sanquist, Lloyd Snyder, Glenray Stinson, Jesse Swain, Geeorge [sic] George Toll and George Warner.
The ballroom will be elaborately decorated. There will be a blue backdrop behind the speaker's table with two panels of glass in blue, maroon, grey and gold, denoting years of service of those who will sit before the panel.
C. P. Adamskick, Toledo, publicity director for the Owens-Illinois Company, will be one of the speakers. Carl Smith, Muncie plant manager; John H. Wright, Toledo, vice-president of the company; M. M. Olander, of Toledo, vice-president; John E. Bauer, Columbus, formerly of Muncie and now plant manager at Columbus; Gene Rogers, Gas City personnel director; and T. A. Collins, Toledo, vice-president of American Structural Products, will be among guests. At the speaker's table will be Charles Sanquist, Muncie, ten year man and Donald Orin, Muncie, personnel director.
Wives of all employes with over 23 years of service will receive corsages. Robert Pershing, Robert Alexander, Harold Joris, Donald Orin, Ed Langas and Ernest Marks are on the arrangements committee.
