Champion Spark Plug Co. and Jeffery-Dewitt Co. merge

Champion and Jeffery-Dewitt, Spark Plug Makers, Combine.

Announcement was made last week that a working agreement had been arranged between two of the largest spark plug manufacturing concerns in the country, the Champion Spark Plug Co., of Toledo. O., and the Jeffery-Dewitt Co., of Detroit, Mich. The former is claimed to be the largest spark plug manufacturing concern in the world, supplying all of the spark plugs used by the Ford, Overland, Studebaker and other automobile manufacturing companies, and the Jeffery-Dewitt Co. also is in the business on a large scale.

Under the agreement, the Champion company will make and market the J-D and Reliance plugs, formerly the product of the Detroit concern, in addition to the well-known Champion plugs. All of the spark plug business formerly done by the two concerns will be conducted from Toledo.

In the future, the operations of the Jeffery-Dewitt Co. will be devoted exclusively to the manufacture of porcelains and porcelain products.

All of the spark plug machinery and equipment of the Jeffery Dewitt Co. Is now being moved to Toledo, and will be installed to the Champion plant, which has recently been enlarged by the addition of forty thousand square feet of floor space. Every part, such as nuts, bolts and washers, entering into the spark plugs will be produced from the raw material by machinery designed especially for the purpose. The present output, given as 26,000 spark plugs per day, will be greatly increased to take care of added business.

Regarding the porcelain plant in Detroit. It is stated that it is thoroughly modern and well equipped, and that it produces porcelains of a superior quality, its capacity being more than 35,000,000 pieces per year. Officials of the concerns involved in the deal state that the consolidation will result in an improved product, better service to the manufacturer, dealer and consumer, and increased production.
