Insulator Machine

Memorandum of agreement regarding operation of experimental semi-automatic insulator press entered into by and between the Hemingray Glass Company and Local 23 of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, on April 5th, 1920.

1. The company, desiring to conduct certain experimental work for the purpose of increasing the production on their semi-automatic insulator press, agrees to man one shop as follows:

Two glass workers both to be members of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, are to be employed on this experimental shop, one glass worker to gather, and one glass worker to take out and control the operation of the shop with a view to increasing the number of insulators made per hour. These two glass workers to alternately gather and take out at such intervals as may produce the best results. Both glass workers on this experimental shop are to be paid turn work at the rate of $7.25 per turn of 7 1/2 hours, unless the number of insulators made per turn, if figured at the presser scale on this present list, should exceed the sum of $7.25, when and which event they are both to receive pressers piece work rate on the present list.

2. Should the experiment outlined in paragraph 1 above prove a success, the company agrees to man all semi-automatic shops requiring a gatherer, in the same manner, provided, however, that Local 23 of the A. F. G. W. U. is able to furnish a sufficient number of skilled workers, individually acceptable to the company, to first man such hand shops as the company may desire to operate.

3. In consideration of the above arrangement, the members of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, who are to be employed on this experimental work on the basis set forth in paragraph one, above, agree to use their best efforts to increase production on the said semi-automatic press.

4. The company further voluntarily agrees to pay for any suggestions from any employee which will improve the operation of this said semi-automatic press or increase its output.
