Negotiations
At Kimble Are
Recessed
Contract negotiations between representatives of the moldmakers Local 50 of the American Flint Glass Workers Union and Kimble Glass Co. officials were "recessed indefinitely" Monday morning, according to a company statement issued early this afternoon.
The breakdown in negotiations follows the Saturday settlement agreed to by Kimble and two other locals of the AFGW, with whom new contracts were written. The Kimble plant has been shut down since Sept. 5 when representatives of the moldmakers' group struck the plant. Members of the other locals honored the moldmaker Local’s picket lines since that time. Upon settlement with Locals 32 and 517 last Saturday, negotiations with the Moldmakers Local 50 were resumed Sunday, only to be broken off abruptly Monday.
THE COMPANY statement issued following the breakdown Monday follows: "Contract negotiations between Moldmakers Local 50 of the AFGW and Kimble Glass Co. were recessed indefinitely this morning.
"The company offered to extend to its moldmakers the same benefits as provided in the new contract agreement reached Saturday with Locals 32 and 517, AFGW. The latter two locals represent all but 20 of the company’s union employes.
"The moldmakers demanded a one-year contract to expire Sept. 1, 1957. The agreement with the other two locals does not expire until Nov. 15, 1958. The company is insisting on the same date for its moldmakers’ contract. All three union locals at the Kimble Glass Co. are members of the American Flint Glass Workers Union. All other issues except the terminal date of the contract have been agreed to by both company and Local 50 in negotiations which began Sunday afternoon. Failing to reach agreement on the terminal date the negotiations were recessed indefinitely."
THE NEW CONTRACT negotiated with Locals 32 and 517, and on which agreement was reached Saturday, provides for wage increases of 6 per cent, with a 10-cent minimum, effective last Sept. 1, and 4 per cent, effective Nov. 16, 1957. Those increases amount to a gross of 25 cents per hour; also provided is a group insurance program. Joint announcement of the Saturday settlement was made by Arthur Jarrett, international union representative, and E. P. Spence, Kimble plant manager.
The strike placed into effect by the moldmakers has idled, a total of about 450 persons.
