Flint Glass

Negotiations

Are Recessed

Negotiations at Toledo between the AFL American Flint Glass Workers Union and the National Association of Manufacturers of Pressed and Blown Glassware were recessed until 10 a.m. Thursday, it was announced Wednesday by William F. Miller, 625 W. 5th St., recording secretary of Local 517, AFGWU, of the Kimble Glass Company.

The strike has idled more than 6,200 workers in six states, including approximately 400 at the local factory. This is the first industry-wide strike in this branch of the glass manufacturing industry. Plants affected are in Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, California and Indiana.

Meanwhile, a settlement was reached late Tuesday in negotiations for the contained glass industry division for American Flint Glass Workers, AFL. Word of the settlement was received here by Tom Bright, president of Local 50, AFGW, a moldmaker’s union.

Bright said Wednesday that no members of his union had been on strike and that the settlement had been made through negotiation. Approximately 50 of the mold-makers are employed at the Ball Brothers Company, with 15 employed at the Kimble Glass Company.

"We are respecting the picket line at the Kimble plant," Bright said Wednesday.

Bright said that he understood the agreement reached at Toledo included a five per cent wage increase, with fringe benefits including a five-cent night differential, three weeks’ paid vacation after 15 years service, a paid two-day "death" layoff and an increase in the amount per man hour contributed by the company for sickness and health benefits.

Meanwhile, operations at the Overmyer Mould Company, Winchester, remained at a standstill Wednesday with members of the local Miscellaneous Union on strike. Members of the Mold and Pattern Makers Unions refused to cross the picket lines.

Still open were the engineering department and offices of the company, which employ approximately 50 persons.
