SATURDAY P. M.

LEAGUE GETS

A GOOD START

Hemingray, Republic and Glascock

Teams Win First Contests

of Season.

Wet grounds slowed down the flying start of the Saturday Afternoon league to a walk.

But despite the handicap or several inches of mud in places, the league got under way in good shape.

Today the Hemingray, Republic and Glascock teams are on top with one game won each, and the Y. M. C. A., Ball Brothers and Warner Gear teams are bemoaning their fates with .000 opposite their names in the tally sheet.

Incidentally, the pre-season dope bucket was upset. The Warner Gear team suffered a 3 to 1 defeat by the husky Hemingray recruits, and the Ball Brothers allie went down under a small avalanche of scores piled up by the Glascock team.

Unless there is a material change in the form of the six teams it looks as if the Glascock and Hemingray teams will he leading the league when the frosts come next fall.

With only a few hours' preparation the Y. M. C. A. team — replacing the T. W. Warners — went into the game at Haughey's against the the Republic team. For the first three innings Vandegriff, for the association boys, held the Republic team down safe, after the "'Y" had sent four runs across in the first. After that the Republic team hammered Vandegriff. Bad grounds and the resultant poor infielding slowed up the game materially.

The score by innings:

Y. M. C. A............................400 000 013 — 8

Republic...............................101 330 50* — 13

Vandegriff and Craiff; F. Allis, Stetters and Crouse.

Mid-season form was displayed by the Hemingray team in its game with the Warner Gears. The Warner Gear team got away in the lead with one score but the Hemingrays came back and cinched the game, 3 to 1. The score:

Warner Gear.........................100 000 000 — 1

Hemingray............................000 200 100 — 3

Longfellow and Bird; Halsinger and Younce.

Scoring two runs in the first inning and crossing the plate at will thereafter, the Glasscock team had no trouble defeating the Ball Brothers team,10 to 2. Following is the score by innings:

Glascock..............................210 211 21* — 10

Ball Brothers.......................000 100 010 — 2

Cannady, Risher and Wolf and Merritt; Carrier and Daubeuner.
