ALLEN WAS FINED HEAVILY
Suspicion Grows Stronger Against
Him in Shooting Mystery.
Yesterday while the police were investigating the mysterious shooting affair Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Van Stone, colored, 917 South Hackley street, when some unknown person went to Mrs. Stone's bedroom window and fired a bullet at her, which became inbedded in the window sill, they came in possession of evidence which they believe tends to throw more light on the case and which increases the feeling of suspicion against James Allen, the negro who was arrested Sunday afternoon by Secretary Jesse White, after Allen had intimated that he was suspected of the shooting.
In questioning certain witnesses in regard to the shooting, the officers discovered that on Saturday evening Allen called at the Hemingray glassworks, where Stone is employed and engaged in an altercation with Stone and another negro, which ended in fight, resulting in Allen being worsted.
Stone claims that as Allen started to leave he made the remark that he would "get even with someone," and immediately left for the home of a friends, where he got a revolver, which was found in his possession Sunday when arrested. The shooting affray, which came later, tends to strengthen the opinion of the police that Allen knows much of the affair although he denies it. Stone refused to file an affidavit against Allen.
Allen was arraigned before Judge White yesterday morning and he entered pleas of guilty in the intoxication and carrying concealed weapon cases against him. He was fined [dollar:$31] and sent to the workhouse.
