Information Sought
On Old Glass Factory
The Christopher Gist Historical Society has received a request from Mrs. Joe Conrad, 120 Edgewood road. Edgewood, for information relative to the Hemingray Glass Factory that operated in Covington a number of years ago, Attorney Stephens L. Blakely, Covington, president of the society, has announced.
Mrs. Conrad, in her letter, said in part: "My father, Richard Gormley (1853-1901), had as a boy learned the glass blowing trade there and according to the information I have he was still associated with this company until about 1887.
"I have quite a few fancy pieces; of glass he had made from scrap glass, chains, paper weights and ornaments, which were recently displayed at the Old American Glass Club, Cincinnati, Ohio.
"I would like to have any information that is available about this factory and the dates. Please advise if there is a book I might buy or be able to read on this subject, and where I might be able to find it"
President Blakely in his reply said in part: "The Hemingray Glass Works, as I recall it, lay on the banks of the Ohio River, near Scott street and Madison avenue, and was operated by Daniel Hemingray, who lived with his family on Greenup street between Sixth and Seventh streets. Many years ago, the plant was moved to Muncie, Ind.
"I have at home an old map which probably would give me the exact location of the factory and if it does I will write you further. In the meantime, I am sure Mr. C. B. Truesdell, secretary of our society, will be able to give you a great deal of information."
John G. Cox, executive director of the Covington-Kenton County Chamber of Commerce announced that he had conferred with a representative of the Kentucky Agricultural and Industrial Development Commission, in an effort to ascertain if it would be possible to prevail upon the company to return to Covington, or a similar company which manufactures glass. However, the commission said it was anxious to know where the company secured its supply of glass sand when operating in Covington, and if there were any such glass sand banks in the area of Covington.
