LONG BEACH, April 19. — Extensive improvements and enlargements of the Craig Ship building Company's plant are being rushed to completion in order to take care of the large increase in business that company has recently experienced.

One of the reasons of the increase is the awarding of a contract for two torpedo boats to the Craig Company by the United States Navy Department. Work has already begun on the laying of the hulls of these vessels, the hull rigging now being put in place. The two torpedo boats will be the first government vessels ever built in Southern California, and the contract is indicative of the growth in efficiency and importance of the harbor and its attending industries.

Only recently the Craig Company put into service the Grace Dollar, a big lumber schooner. So satisfactory was this ship that a contract was made at once with the Craig Company by the Hammond Lumber Company for a lumber vessel which, when completed, will be the largest lumber carrier on the Pacific Coast. The vessel will have a capacity of 2,500,000 feet of lumber and will measure 900 feet in length. She will be put into service within a comparatively short time. Work on the vessel is now going forward at an extremely rapid rate.

Commercial development of the Long Beach end of the harbor has been given a great impetus as a result of the Craig operations and also because of the placing on the markets of developed deep water frontage by the Newport-Middleton Syndicate of Los Angeles. From reliable sources it is understood that three new industries which will employ large forces of men are to locate in the vicinity of the Craig plant and the Newport-Middleton Syndicate holdings across from the Craig plant on Channel No. 3. The offering of the syndicate holdings makes it possible for industries to secure sites on developed deep water frontage which impossible except through excessively high leases.

One of the concerns which is quietly making a big record for itself is the California Glass Insulator Company. Recently this concern made a contract with the Westinghouse Electric Company to supply 3,000,000 glass insulators for telegraph, telephone and electric wires, yearly. Because of the cheapness of raw materials and the double advantage of rail and water transportation, the glass company is able to supply insulators at forty per cent less than any competitor.

It has been semi-officially announced that the Hammond Lumber Company will, as soon as its fleet of lumber vessels is in commission, make improvements in its yards costing $1,000,000. The Hammond yards are located in the Los Angeles portion of the inner harbor.
