THE FLINT GLASS WORKERS.

JULY 8 the eighteenth annual convention of the American Flint Glass Workers' union was called to order at Liberty Hall, Toledo, O., by President W. J. Smith, of Pittsburgh, with nearly 200 delegates present. Following the formal opening Mayor Major delivered an appropriate address of welcome in which he assured the delegates that al courtesy would be shown them during their brief stay in the city. In closing his speech he expressed the hope that Toledo would before long become the banner city for glass work, and that the delegates would go their homes carrying away many pleasant recollections of the visit there. A Pittsburgh firm, the Heinz Glass Co., through its representative, G. A. Evans, made application for permission to operate during the summer months, but were refused.

A short session was held on the 10th. There was nothing new to be presented to committees, and there was nothing for the whole convention to do. In the afternoon the delegates went out on the lake, aboard the steamer Dove, in accordance with the arrangements made by the local executive committee from the two local unions.

According to the official reports for the year ending July 1, 1895, the disbursements for all purposes, including the amounts paid for strike benefits in the United States glass company trouble and other lockouts, amount to $333,695.41. The receipts for the year, including balance on hand July 1, 1894, were $425,569.77, and there is now a cash balance in the treasury of $91,874.36.
