BUSINESS MEMORANDA.

Another glass manufacturing company in San Francisco has come to grief. Since the San Francisco and Pacific Glass Works were established here, years ago, many rivals have entered the field of competition against them, but one by one they have dropped out of the fight, until to-day the concern mentioned stands a living witness to the Darwinian theory of "the survival of the fittest." Under the able management of Carlton Newman, who has since childhood been connected with that line of manufacture, the San Francisco and Pacific Glassworks have built up a large and profitable business, to the practical monopoly of the demand for the home manufactured article upon this coast; and the invariable failure of its competitors clearly proves either that they were all badly managed, or, which is more likely, that there is only room for one such establishment here. The last attempt at competition was made by the California Glass Works. About a year ago they became involved in business difficulties and were closed out by the sheriff, but they managed to make another start and struggled along until recently, when their fires again died out; this time without hope of being again lighted. Since then all their available stock and material has been bought by the San Francisco Glass Works, but it is uncertain as to what will be done with their apparently useless machinery. — California Grocer and Canner.
